Mobile culture

The very appearance of the mobile communication changed behavioral patterns of a modern person a lot. In 2004 the number of mobile communication users grew rapidly, and the service went large-scale. However, mobile communication stayed a new service for people, so no conventional social norms and rules for using mobile phones and communication in public places existed. Mobile phone gives its owner additional freedom of communication, and at the same time it can restrict another person’s freedom or even bother him.

Program goal: assistance in forming skills of ethic mobile communications usage in the Ukrainian society.

An “Influence of the mobile communication on the behavioral norms of the Ukrainian society” All Ukrainian social research was conducted in 2007 in conjunction with Institute of Sociology. Results showed that 50% of the respondents noted the necessity of creating and spreading norms regarding to mobile communication usage. Within the “To the mobile culture in Ukraine!” company’s initiative, collaboration was started with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Ukraine, MOI DMV Department. The result of this work was the “Rules of the ethic mobile communication usage” that encompass principal recommendations regarding behavior with the mobile phone.

Results:

In 2008 the clients’ concern level regarding the aforementioned factors dropped by at least two times:

  1. communication via mobile phone provides discomfort for the surrounding people in cultural institutions, public places — 15%;
  2. increased danger from drivers that use mobile phones while behind the wheel — 10%.
Currently Kyivstar is the only mobile operator in Ukraine that pays attention to the creating of mobile communication usage culture in the society.
